DIN 660 Round Head Rivet

A solid rivet with a domed head. The shank goes through a drilled hole and the protruding end is deformed — cold at these sizes — into a second head, so the joint is permanent: removing the rivet destroys it. Nominal diameters run from 1 to 8 mm and the standard prints a mass for every length it makes, which is why the length lists on these pages differ from diameter to diameter rather than running as one block. The sizes in brackets — 1.4, 3.5 and 7 mm — are the standard's non-preferred sizes; they are tabulated all the same, because they are made and sold.

Where it is used

Round head solid rivets are the default permanent fastener for sheet metal, ducting, hinges, tool handles and anything else that is assembled once and never taken apart. The domed head is left proud of the surface, which suits structures where the head is not in the way — a bracket, a case, a nameplate. They are set with a hammer and a dolly, or with a squeeze riveter in production; the shank upsets into a second head on the far side, so access to both faces is required. That single requirement is what rules them out for box sections and tubes.

How to choose it

Choose the diameter from the sheet thickness and the load, then choose the length so that enough shank protrudes to form the upset head. DIN 660 tabulates a maximum grip length for every length it makes, in its Table 3, and the standard itself calls those figures guidance only — trial riveting is recommended, especially in series production. The hole is H12, slightly larger than the shank, so the rivet drops in without force; a hole drilled to the nominal shank diameter will need the rivet driven, and a driven rivet has already started to deform before it is set.

Fitting and interchange notes

The sizes in brackets — 1.4, 3.5 and 7 mm — are non-preferred and the standard asks that they be avoided where possible; they are tabulated here because they are made and sold. Lengths above 40 mm are graded in 5 mm steps. Two properties matter when ordering: the material, because the standard sets a minimum tensile strength per material group rather than a single grade, and the finish, because plated rivets are supplied bright unless a coating is agreed. A solid rivet cannot be removed without destroying it — if the joint has to come apart, use a screw or a blind rivet instead.
