222 Series Spherical Roller Bearings

The light spherical roller series, and the one that carries the same envelopes as the cylindrical roller NU 22 and the self-aligning 2200: a 22205 is 25 × 52 × 18 mm, the three figures a NU2205 and a 2205 already carry. What the three do not share is what rolls inside.

Wide light serieswhere it sits and what it trades away

The light one of the three: at every bore the three share it is smaller across than the 213 and the 223 — a 22208 is 40 × 80 × 23 mm, where a 21308 and a 22308 are both 40 mm bore and 90 mm across, in 23 and 33 mm widths. It runs from 22205 at 25 × 52 × 18 to 22220 at 100 × 180 × 46. Its dimension series is 22, which is the rung the light cylindrical roller NU 22 and the self-aligning 2200 already sit on: those carry the identical outside diameters and widths, so a housing bored for a NU2205 takes this 22205. Smallest envelope of the three, and the least it can carry.

Reading the designation. A 22205 is the type code 2 for a double-row spherical roller bearing, the dimension series 22 and the bore code 05. The 22 carries both of its digits: 2 for the width series and 2 for the diameter series. The diameter series is the one that fixes the outside diameter, and that is what makes the family line up with the two below. The bore code reads as it does everywhere else: 00, 01, 02 and 03 are 10, 12, 15 and 17 mm, and from 04 upwards the code multiplies by five.

Why the 222, the NU 22 and the 2200 have the same numbers. All three stand on dimension series 22, so all three use the same rungs of the same ladder: a 22205 is 25 × 52 × 18 mm, a 2205 is 25 × 52 × 18 mm and a NU2205 is 25 × 52 × 18 mm. Three types — two rows of barrel rollers, two rows of balls and one row of cylindrical rollers — in one envelope, and the only thing separating them is the type code inside the designation. At the other end a 22220 is 100 × 180 × 46 mm against the 2220's identical figures. The range the three share is 25 to 90 mm: the NU 22 stops at a 90 mm bore, and this series and the 2200 both run on to 100.

The smallest envelope of the three spherical roller series. Diameter series 2 is one rung below the 3 that the 213 and the 223 use, and the gap is plain at the same bore: a 22208 is 40 × 80 × 23 mm where a 21308 and a 22308 are both 90 mm across, 23 and 33 mm wide. Smaller across means less roller path and less radial capacity at the same shaft diameter — this is the series to start from and the 213 or the 223 the ones to step up to, and the step is always taken in the housing, never on the shaft.

What the type buys, and what it costs. Two rows of barrel rollers on a sphered outer raceway, so the bearing keeps working through shaft deflection and housing distortion that would shorten the life of a deep groove bearing, and carries far more radial load than a ball bearing in the same envelope. What it does not cost is room: the 222 sits on the 2200's envelopes, so a 22205 and a 2205 are both 25 × 52 × 18 mm and the difference between them is entirely inside. How much misalignment a specific bearing absorbs is a catalogue value, not something the boundary dimension plan fixes, so no figure for it is published here.

Why there is a chamfer column on these pages, and none on the cylindrical roller pages. ISO 15 gives a spherical roller bearing a single r s min for the corner, so one value covers the plan. For a cylindrical roller bearing the same standard gives a separate minimum for each ring, and of the sources checked here only one prints both — not enough under this library's rule that a published figure needs two independent sources, so that type's column is left out rather than half-filled. The ISO 582 page explains what the two values are and why they differ.

Every designation in the table below links to its own page with the ISO 15 dimensions, the bore-code arithmetic, the radial internal clearance ranges ISO 5753-1 gives for this type, and the same-bore comparison against every other series and type.

This series runs from a 25 mm to a 100 mm bore. The sub-library as a whole reaches 300 mm, and the widest single bearing in it is a 6360, 620 mm across, in the 6300 series. This one stops short of it.

d = bore diameter, D = outside diameter, B = width. All of them are ISO 15 standard values and are the same for every manufacturer. r s min is the minimum single chamfer dimension the plan gives; its matching maximum is in ISO 582, which is why the column says “min” and not an equality. The last column is derived: radial section = (D − d) / 2, the wall thickness you are working with when you size the housing. No load rating and no limiting speed appears here — see the bearings index for why.

Outside diameter × overall size in millimetres, for the 5 smallest bores in this database. The full charts, one per type, are on the bearings index. Reading a row is what a machine designer does when the shaft is already fixed: the bore does not change, the housing bore does. Across the type boundary the last number changes meaning — it is a width above and a height below — so compare within a type, then decide whether the job wants a ball bearing, a tapered roller or a thrust bearing at all.

Frequently asked questionsreading a bearing designation

Is a 22205 the same size as a 2205?

Yes — 25 × 52 × 18 mm, both to ISO 15, and the same holds down the series. The 2205 is a self-aligning ball bearing and the 22205 a double-row spherical roller bearing, so what they do with the envelope is different: the 2205 has two rows of balls and suits light loads where misalignment has to be absorbed, and the 22205 has two rows of barrel rollers on line contact and carries far more radial load in the same space. Either fits a housing bored for the other.

Is a 22205 interchangeable with a NU2205?

They are the same size and they are not the same bearing. Bore, outside diameter and width are identical — 25 × 52 × 18 mm, both to ISO 15 — so either fits a housing bored for the other. But the NU2205 has a single row of cylindrical rollers, carries radial load and locates nothing along the shaft, while the 22205 has two rows of barrel rollers on a sphered raceway, absorbs misalignment and takes axial load as well. Match the bearing to the duty, not to the hole.

222 or 223 — which should I specify?

Choose on the load and on the space. The 222 is the light one: at a 40 mm bore a 22208 is 80 mm across and 23 mm wide, where the 22308 needs a 90 mm housing bore and is 33 mm wide, and the larger envelope carries the greater radial load. If the housing cannot grow, the 222 is the one that fits; if the load is the constraint and the housing can, the 223 buys capacity without asking for a longer shaft.
