AS568 000 Series O-Rings — 0.070 in Cord

The 000 series is the thin-cord family of AS568 — the one you meet in small threaded fittings, instruments and pneumatic lines. A 0.070 in cord carries almost the whole family; the first three dash numbers are the ones that do not, and they are thinner than the cord the family is named after.

000 Serieswhat is in this family and where it ends

Those three — the -001, -002 and -003 — are the clearest argument that the numbering is a lookup and not a rule. Nothing about a dash number tells you its cord until you have read the table, and the thinnest cords in the standard sit in a family named for a thicker one.

Inside diameters here do not step evenly, and no constant can be recovered from the gaps: the spacing changes value several times across the range, so it cannot be used to interpolate. A size that is not in the table is not an AS568 size, and the answer for an unlisted bore is a custom ring rather than a rounded dash number.

This is 50 dash numbers, from the -001 at 0.029 in (0.74 mm) inside diameter to the -050 at 5.239 in (133.07 mm). Its cord is 0.070 in (1.78 mm) except on 3 sizes, where it is thinner.

The numbering in this family is continuous across -001 to -050: there are no missing dash numbers inside the range.

3 sizes here have an inside diameter smaller than the cord is thick — the -001 (0.029 in inside on a 0.040 in cord), the -002 (0.042 in inside on a 0.050 in cord) and the -003 (0.056 in inside on a 0.060 in cord).

Inches are the standard’s own units; millimetre values are conversions — inch × 25.4, rounded to two decimals — and not the ISO 3601-1 metric sizes. Outside diameter is a reference value derived as ID + 2 × cross-section; the two diameters the standard fixes are the inside diameter and the cord.

Tolerances are the per-size figures the standard gives, not a value derived from the diameter — the same inside diameter can carry a different tolerance in a different series, and each page prints its own.

Reading a 0xx dash numberwhat the digits do and do not tell you

Every dash number in this family starts with the digit 0, which is what puts it here. The remaining two digits are its position in the family, counted upwards by inside diameter — they are not a size code, and nothing in them can be multiplied or read off to get a dimension. Two rings whose numbers differ by one can differ by a hundredth of an inch or by a quarter of one.

A cord family is named for the cord its sizes are built on, and the name is a fair description of every size in it only when the family has a single cord throughout. This one does not — it carries 0.040 in (1.02 mm), 0.050 in (1.27 mm), 0.060 in (1.52 mm) and 0.070 in (1.78 mm).
